The best kind of friends … exit the cave at 6AM

The best kind of friends … exit the cave at 6AM to howling wind and snow ❄️ after a 19 hour cave trip, have smiles on their faces 😃, and are psyched to go have breakfast 🍜, while sharing their findings with other team members ... before crawling into their tents 🏕. Cave is getting deep and the trips to the bottom are starting to become pretty long! It’s probably good that we ran out of rope or else we’d have possibly exceeded a 24 hour trip…

Today was another amazing day of surveying down going passage in a canyon with walls speckled in fossils. Thanks to the previous team (@penelopevorster, @the.redneck.agenda, and Mark) for starting to rig the pit that took a cumulative 5 hours to rig and remove loose rock from.

Rigging, rigging, and more rigging. The caves in Wyoming seem to swallow ROPE! This was one of those days when the passage just kept going…

Ridgewalking in Wyoming’s mountains ⛰ looking

Ridgewalking in Wyoming’s mountains ⛰ looking for caves on a rainy rest day, after having exited the cave we’d been exploring and mapping at 3 AM that same morning. The weather came in waves 🌊, beginning with rain 🌧, followed by fog 🌬, and then clearing up 🌤 for a brief moment before the next wave of weather rolled in. Most of the time, we found ourselves in a sea of fog, in which it was difficult to see more than a couple hundred feet ahead. We found a few small holes, but nothing that excited us. That said, we did find this contrast of delicate Balsamroot 🌼 nestled amongst the jagged karst terrain quite delightful.

On stormy days in the mountains, or any days for that matter, rest days very rarely mean sitting in camp waiting for the weather to get better or your body to feel rested. Because this means sitting around shivering and thinking about your exhaustion, rather than moving and keeping your mind occupied with the curiosities of what you might find. And, if you wait around for your circumstances in life to change, you will always be waiting…
